This three-day First Aid at Work course is designed for people who need to act as an appointed first aider in the workplace, in line with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations. It provides the minimum contact time required for a regulated Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification.
Who should attend
Workplaces with higher-risk activities (for example manufacturing, engineering, warehouses, construction-related sites, or busy leisure facilities) often need first aiders trained to FAW standard. Delegates should normally be 16 or over.
What you will learn
- The role and responsibilities of the first aider, preventing cross-infection, and use of equipment
- Assessing an incident and prioritising treatment
- Unresponsive casualties, recovery position, CPR, and use of an AED
- Heart attack, angina, stroke, choking, and severe bleeding
- Shock, burns and scalds, minor injuries, and eye injuries
- Fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, head and spinal injuries
- Chest injuries, crush injuries, poisoning, anaphylaxis
- Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and other medical emergencies
- Effects of heat and cold, and electrical incidents
- Recording incidents and handover to emergency services
Assessment and certification
Assessment is through practical observation and questioning, in line with the awarding organisation requirements. Successful candidates receive a First Aid at Work certificate, typically valid for three years. Employers should plan refresher or requalification training before expiry.
